Pebisnis cilik asal Long Island menargetkan pertumbuhan menjadi lebih dari US$300 ribu.

Suatu ketika, orangtua Lizzie pernah bertanya bagaimana caranya memperoleh uang.

Careers Fears Should Conquered !

By: Susan Johnston

For most people, Halloween conjures scary images of witches, goblins, and ghosts. But for many workers, there are other fears lurking in the shadows all year: like the fear of being reprimanded, laid off, or stuck in a dead-end Job. According to Ford R. Myers, president of Career Potential, LLC, and the author of "Get the Job You Want, Even When No One's Hiring," "the American workplace is largely driven by fear. Most bosses use fear as a mechanism to control and drive the employee's activity." - Job

Fear #1: What if I get laid off?
Given the unemployment rate, layoffs are a chillingly real possibility for many workers. However, you can cope with that fear by actively building your network. "Regardless of whether you believe you'll be laid off, you should proactively engage in your professional community," says Michael Woodward, PhD, an executive coach and the author of the "The You Plan." "Belong to your professional association or community organizations. ... The difference between those who stay unemployed and those who are quickly able to get back on their feet is that the latter have strong networks."
Fear #2: If I don't get laid off, but others do, will I be able to handle the added responsibilities?
When companies downsize, often the best employees get "rewarded" with more work. This can cause job-performance anxiety, especially if the new tasks are outside your skill set or if you're afraid of adding another project to your to-do list. In this situation, Woodward suggests reaching out to your boss and coworkers for guidance. "Knowledge helps create certainty," he says. "You could wallow in that stress or you could say, 'I need some clarification on a couple of points.' It's an opportunity to broaden your skill set and to make yourself more valuable in the future."
Fear #3: Will I be underemployed forever?
Often younger workers end up in support roles where they may not feel challenged. More-experienced workers can also wind up in this predicament due to a layoff or workforce re-entry. However, thinking ahead to your next position keeps things in perspective when it feels like you're endlessly folding t-shirts or fetching coffee. "The smart person does not just ... do what the boss tells them and nothing more," says Myers. "They should consistently grow their credentials. Step up for the juicier, more challenging assignments. Show up earlier; leave later." Remember, the old model of your boss or human resources managing your career is no longer applicable. It's up to you to determine your next steps.
Fear #4: What if my boss yells at me again?
A boss who yells or criticizes you in front of others can really damage morale, so Myers advises that people be "very, very careful about the culture that they choose." Another thing, he says, "is to be very proactive and clear with your boss when you first get hired about how you establish the relationship and set the right precedent." If you're already in a job with a toxic boss, you can sometimes manage a situation (and prevent future problems) by discussing it in a calm, nonthreatening manner. "Don't bring it up in public and don't point fingers," Myers advises. "Say to your boss, I have a concern about something that happened. I'm not sure what your motivation was. I may have misunderstood, but this was my perception; I'd like to get your take on it."

Re New Your Work In 2011

Sometimes, a job even a pretty good one--can start to feel like it's "going nowhere." But although you may want to advance your career, you may not be in a position to look for a New Job. Maybe you're in an industry where staffing is still tight. Or maybe you just started a new job, and you'd like to put in a few years before moving on. Or maybe you can't take a financial risk right now.
Whatever the case, there are small changes you can make that will boost your Career without giving it a major overhaul. We asked several experts for their tips:
1. Improve relations with your boss.
Your direct supervisor is one of the most important people in your professional life. If that relationship is feeling strained, get back into your boss's good graces by figuring out how to best communicate with him or her, suggests Katherine Reynolds Lewis, a workplace journalist for About.com and the Fiscal Times. "So often, managers have so little time to do the management, so you have to manage up," she says. Ask your supervisor if you can schedule a weekly check-in meeting. Or if your manager is more spontaneous, strike up a conversation and subtly mention your latest accomplishments. "Don't assume that your boss knows when you've done a great Job," urges Lewis.
2. Beat procrastination or lateness.
If you struggle with tardiness or procrastination, then Fearless Career coach Victoria Ashford suggests owning up to the weakness and enlisting coworkers to help you stay accountable. "The biggest hindrance is not having a good support system," she explains. "Tell people, 'This is a problem for me,' and get them to share their techniques." Understanding the consequences can also help. "If you're not there on time, the door gets closed for a meeting," says Ashford, "and the embarrassment of you peeking through the glass reinforces the need to be on time." - Job Vacancy

5 New Year's Career Resolutions for 2011 !

By: Lydia Dishman

There's just something about opening a calendar for a new year that inspires us to improve our lives. So it's no surprise that New Year's career resolutions often focus on big goals--such as a promotion or a new Job.
And that's why many resolutions get tossed aside by the second week in January, according to Tracy Brisson, founder and CEO of The Opportunities Project. "We get overwhelmed when we realize that outcomes are not always in our control," she explains. But Brisson says that there are plenty of attainable goals--such as adding people to your network or committing to read one business-related book per month--that can add up to Career success.

Sara Sutton Fell, CEO of Flexjobs.com, recommends a mix of easy-to-achieve and lofty goals. She says, "The important part is to choose goals that are directly related to making you more successful in your job."
Here are some other suggestions from the experts:

Hone your elevator pitch.
For Jasmin French, principal of the personal branding firm J. French, it starts with honing your personal brand. French advises doing a simple inventory, "What did you do in 2010 that has transferable value to your employer or potential employer in 2011?" Then, she says, turn that into a succinct (60 seconds or less) pitch on what you are uniquely positioned to do better than anyone else.
French also suggests that you get people to start talking about you by updating your LinkedIn profile with any certifications you've earned or classes you're taking, as well as forwarding relevant articles. "Create your own buzz. It's self-promotion, but it's not shameless."

Brush up on hard skills.
Victoria Ashford, a leadership and career coach at Fearless Leading, suggests heading back to school for additional education, certification, diplomas, or language skills. "Once you have the knowledge and skill, it's yours forever--hard to take away," she notes. "Industries and work environments change, so make sure you're keeping up. Be intentional about your knowledge base and upgrade or update it now."

Solidify your soft skills.
While you're admiring that new diploma hanging on the wall, Ashford cautions that you shouldn't forget about "soft" skills, such as business etiquette, body language, and personal accountability. "Master the arts of introductions, conversation, and establishing professional presence. Ask others to judge your handshake, table manners, and posture," she advises.
A University of Illinois study concluded that 55 percent of the first impression you make is based on your appearance and your body language. And while first impressions are made within the first 30 seconds of meeting someone, it can take up to as many as 21 interactions to undo a bad first impression. French says, "If you want to be known for being detail-oriented, hem your pants, polish your fingernails, or iron that shirt."

Work better with others.
Susan Bender Phelps, a trainer and speaker with Odyssey Mentoring, urges employees to treat everyone they work with as if they are a customer. "Everyone includes your company's management team, your direct supervisor, even your cubicle-mate. Provide knock-your-socks-off service."
Bender Phelps says that one place to start is by sharing credit with your team and with everyone in the organization who contributed to a success. "When you do this consistently, you become the kind of leader people will want to follow, regardless of your title." Likewise, acknowledge people when they do great work, and be specific: "Give evidence that demonstrates you understand their work and the difference it made to the organization."
Approach failure as an opportunity.
"Use every failure or mistake as an opportunity to learn and plan for the future," emphasizes Bender Phelps. She recommends paying attention to what you were trying to accomplish, what you did to make that happen, what went right, and what went wrong. By taking time to consider what went into a failed initiative, you can learn what could have been done better--and in the future, if you're presented with a similar situation or project, you'll know what you should do differently.

Brazil Central Bank Head 'Ousted' as Inflation Rises !!!

Author: bbc.co.uk - Job Indonesia

Job Vacancy - His successor will be the central bank's financial regulation head, Alexandre Tombini, according to a report in Folha de Sao Paulo. - Lowongan Kerja
The widely expected move by recently elected President Dilma Rousseff may pave the way for interest rate cuts.
Yet data released on Tuesday showed that inflation is on the rise again, hitting 5.47% in November.
This is well above the central bank's year-end target of 4.5%.
The choice of Mr Tombini, an economist, from within the bank's ranks may provide some reassurance to financial markets that President Rousseff will not push as aggressively as previously feared for looser monetary policy.

Japan Passes New $61bn Stimulus Package !!!

Author: bbc.co.uk

Job Vacancy - The stimulus was designed to create jobs, Prime Minister Nato Kan said, through measures to help small businesses and boost consumer spending. Job Indonesia - The government has already introduced several stimulus packages. Earlier, figures showed that Japanese consumer prices fell for the 20th month in a row in October. - Lowongan Kerja
The vote in favour of the latest stimulus measures represents a victory for the government, which has struggled getting the package through parliament.
The move is in marked contrast to European governments' policies, which are focusing on cutting spending to secure growth.

Falling prices

Japan has been struggling with weak growth, a high yen and deflation.
The core consumer price index fell by 0.6% in October compared with a year earlier, official figures showed.
This was a slight improvement on the 1.1% price falls seen in September.
Deflation is particularly damaging to economic growth as consumers delay purchases until prices fall further.
The improvement from September does not reflect any improvement in consumer demand, analysts said.
"Even though the pace of the fall in prices slowed by 0.5 percentage points, this was not due to an improved demand-supply balance," said Asushi Matsumoto at the Mizuho Research Institute.
Instead, he said, it was down to one-off factors, such as a hike in cigarette prices.
This means that "exit from deflation will be slower than previously thought," Mr Matsumoto argued.
Weak exports
Japan is also struggling with a strong yen, which makes exports more expensive to overseas consumers.
Figures released on Thursday showed export growth slowing for the eighth month in a row, with exports to Europe falling for first time for almost a year.
Analysts say weaker exports could also contribute to reduced consumer demand.
"Weak growth in exports could worsen corporate earnings, thus lowering household incomes to dampen consumer demand," Mr Matsumoto said.

Euro Steady After Irish Republic 85bn Euro Bail-Out !!!

Author: bbc.co.uk

Lowongan Kerja - Ministers have reached an agreement over a bail-out worth about 85bn euros ($113bn; £72bn).
Job Indonesia - The deal will see 35bn euros go towards propping up the Irish banking system, with the remaining 50bn euros to help the government's day-to-day spending.
In early trade on Monday the euro was ahead by 0.40% at $1.3241.
It had earlier slipped to $1.3181, its lowest level since 21 September, before rebounding.
Reassurance
Meanwhile, European Central Bank policymaker Christian Noyer sought to bolster market confidence in the eurozone's rescue for the Republic.
Mr Noyer is the first member of the ECB's policy council to speak after eurozone ministers sealed the deal for Dublin on Sunday.

Start Quote

Mr Osborne hopes the eurosceptics in his own party will be reassured that Britain won't participate in eurozone bail-outs after 2013”
End Quote
He said he was confident the deal would bring down Dublin's borrowing costs to more normal levels.
"There is no reason to doubt the recovery plans of the two countries," Mr Noyer said in a speech in Tokyo, referring to Ireland and Greece.
And French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde said the bail-out was "sufficient" and that "irrational" markets were not correctly pricing the sovereign debt situation in Europe.
"The amount [of the bail-out] is sufficient because that will keep Ireland afloat for three years," she told RTL radio.
France and Germany have also said the Republic of Ireland bail-out should draw a line under its debt crisis.
And they have expressed confidence in Portugal's ability to correct its finances and avoid needing outside help.
'Best available deal'
An average interest rate of 5.8% will be payable on the loans, above the 5.2% paid by Greece for its bail-out.
Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen said it was the "best available deal for Ireland".
It provides "vital time and space to successfully and conclusively address the problems we've been dealing with since the financial crisis began", he said.
The Irish government has also said that interest payments on all state debt will account for more than 20% of tax revenues in 2014.
The deal does not require the Republic to change its low 12.5% corporation tax. -  Job Vacancy

Job Indonesia - Nielsen's role as a hapless doctor in the disaster spoof film Airplane! made him a comic star Veteran comic actor Leslie Nielsen, star of Airplane! and The Naked Gun, has died at the age of 84. -  Job Vacancy
He died in hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he was being treated for pneumonia, his agent John S Kelly said. - Lowongan Kerja
Canadian-born Nielsen started out as a serious actor but in 1980, his role as a hapless doctor in the disaster spoof film Airplane! made him a comic star.
In all, he appeared in more than 100 films and had a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. "With his friends and his wife by his side, he just fell asleep and passed away," his nephew Doug Nielsen said, the AFP news agency reported.
'Don't call me Shirley', born in the Canadian city of Regina in 1926, Leslie Nielsen enjoyed an acting career which spanned six decades. He started as a television actor in New York in 1950, performing in about 150 live dramas.
In the mid-1950s, he moved to Hollywood, where he initially carved out a film career as a leading man, capitalising on his craggy good looks and 6ft2in (194cm) height.
Then in 1980 his deadpan delivery in the comedy disaster movie Airplane! marked him out as a gifted clown, says the BBC's Rajesh Mirchandani in Los Angeles.
It was in this role that he became known for the line "Don't call me Shirley".
The success of Airplane! led to another TV role in the spoof crime show Police Squad where he first played accident-prone detective Frank Drebin.
He went on to make three films as the same character in the Naked Gun series, starring opposite Priscilla Presley.
He continued working into his eighties.
Nearly two weeks ago - at the age of 84 - Nielsen was taken into hospital in Florida where he lived, suffering from pneumonia.
His condition had worsened over the last two days and relatives said he passed away peacefully, our correspondent says.
What are your memories of Leslie Nielsen? Have you met him? What is your favourite film that he starred in? Send us your comments using the form below.

US Condemns Wikileaks Diplomatic Cables Release !!!US Condemns Wikileaks Diplomatic Cables Release !!!

Author: bbc.co.uk

Job Vacancy - Between the revelations is a report Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah urged the US to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities. - Lowongan Kerja
Job Indonesia - The founder of Wikileaks, Julian Assange, said the US authorities were afraid of being held to account.
But the White House said the release was "reckless" put the lives of diplomats and others at risk.
One Republican congressman called for Wikileaks to be designated a terrorist organisation.
Peter King, a member of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, said the latest release "manifests Mr Assange's purposeful intent to damage not only our national interests in fighting the war on terror, but also undermines the very safety of coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan".
The US Department of Defence says it is making its computer systems more secure to prevent future leaks.

Computer hacking
Wikileaks has only posted some 200 of the 251,287 messages it says it has obtained. However, the entire bundle of cables has been made available to five publications, including the New York Times and the UK's Guardian newspaper.

Wikileaks

  • Website with a reputation for publishing sensitive material
  • Run by Julian Assange, an Australian with a background in computer network hacking
  • Released 90,000 secret US records of US military incidents about the war in Afghanistan and 400,000 similar documents on Iraq
  • Also posted video showing US helicopter killing 12 people - including two journalists - in Baghdad in 2007
  • Other controversial postings include screenshots of the e-mail inbox and address book of US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin
Concerns aired in the documents include the security of Pakistani nuclear material that could be used to make an atomic weapon.
The widespread use of computer hacking by China's government is also reported.
The leaked US embassy cables also reportedly include accounts of:
  • Iran attempting to adapt North Korean rockets for use as long-range missiles
  • Corruption within the Afghan government with concerns heightened when a senior official was found to be carrying more than $52m (£33m) in cash on a foreign trip; - President Hamid Karzai is described as ''extremely weak'' and prone to being persuaded by conspiracy theories
  • Bargaining to empty the Guantanamo Bay prison camp - including Slovenian diplomats being told to take in a freed prisoner if they wanted to secure a meeting with President Barack Obama
  • Germany being warned in 2007 not to enforce arrest warrants for US Central Intelligence Agency officers involved in an operation in which an innocent German citizen with the same name as a suspected militant was abducted and held in Afghanistan
  • US officials being instructed to spy on the UN leadership by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
  • The very close relationship between Russian PM Vladimir Putin and his Italian counterpart Silvio Berlusconi
  • Alleged links between the Russian government and organised crime
  • Yemen's president talking to then US Mid-East commander General David Petraeus about attacks on Yemeni al-Qaeda bases and saying: "We'll continue saying the bombs are ours, not yours"
  • Faltering US attempts to prevent Syria from supplying arms to Hezbollah in Lebanon
Shedding light on wars?
View of the WikiLeaks homepage taken in Washington on 28 November
2010 Wikileaks argues that the site's previous releases shed light on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The leaked embassy cables are both contemporary and historical, and include a 1989 note from a US diplomat in Panama City musing about the options open to Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega and referring to him as "a master of survival" - the author apparently had no idea that US forces would invade a week later and arrest Noriega.
In a statement, the White House said: "Such disclosures put at risk our diplomats, intelligence professionals, and people around the world who come to the United States for assistance in promoting democracy and open government.
"President Obama supports responsible, accountable, and open government at home and around the world, but this reckless and dangerous action runs counter to that goal."
No-one has been charged with passing the diplomatic files to the website but suspicion has fallen on US Army private Bradley Manning, an intelligence analyst arrested in Iraq in June and charged over an earlier leak of classified US documents to Mr Assange's organisation.
The cables release was the third mass Wikileaks release of classified documents since it published 77,000 secret US files on the Afghan conflict in July, and 400,000 documents about the Iraq war in October.
Wikileaks argues the release of the documents has shed light on the wars, including allegations of torture and reports that suggest 15,000 additional civilian deaths in Iraq.

Before Bangladesh Strike, Mass Arrests !!!

Lowongan Kerja - Officials say they are arresting only those who might indulge in violence during the strike. -  Job Vacancy
Job Indonesia - The BNP has been holding rallies across the country for the last few days in protest at what they describe as anti-democratic moves by the government.
In many places police used tear gas and batons to disperse activists.
The BNP has called for a strike on Tuesday in protest against what it calls the Awami League-led government's inability to govern the country and its dictatorial methods.
It will be the second such opposition-sponsored action in about two weeks.
Business leaders and civil society activists have already urged the BNP to cancel, saying it will severely disrupt normal life and commercial activities.
The strike comes two weeks after BNP party leader Begum Khaleda Zia was evicted from her residence in military-owned house in the capital, Dhaka.
The house was leased to Ms Zia, a year after the assassination of her husband - former president General Zia-ur-Rahman - in a military coup in 1981.
The government said the lease to the house was illegal.
Her supporters argue that she should be allowed  staying in the house and the government's decision to evict her was political.
Analysts warn that if the two main parties do not resolve their differences soon, then the country may witness a series of strikes in the coming weeks.

The Pressure of North Korea !

Author: bbc.co.uk (

Job Indonesia - Military action is out - it carries with it the risk that the North would retaliate and might even launch action of its own. - Lowongan Kerja
North Korea has a million-strong army, 18,000 artillery pieces and possibly useable nuclear weapons. -  Job Vacancy
Sanctions have limited impact on the North. It is already ignoring UN sanctions restricting trade in military equipment and luxury goods.
It manages to keep going with Chinese help and that is unlikely to be withdrawn.
It might be that the South is left to make a lot of diplomatic noise, with American echoes.
In the end it might have to accept that the lesser of two evils is to make its factual case, protest, gain international support, limit its own dealings with North Korea and then continue to build up its forces for the future.
The China dimension The sinking of the Cheonan is not the first incident along the line of the disputed maritime boundary off the west coast.

NORTH KOREAN ATTACKS

  • Jan 1967 - attacks South Korean warship near border, killing 39 sailors
  • Jan 1968 - commandos storm presidential palace in Seoul in a failed attempt to kill President Park Chung-hee
  • Jan 1968 - captures USS Pueblo - one crew member dies and 82 held hostage for 11 months
  • Dec 1969 - hijacks South Korean airliner taking dozens of passengers hostage
  • Oct 1983 - bombs hotel in Rangoon, Burma in failed attempt to kill South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan - 21 people die
  • Nov 1987 - bombs South Korean airliner, killing 115
  • Sept 1996 - sub carrying 26 troops disabled off South - some land in South sparking deadly manhunt
  • Mar 2010 - torpedoes Cheonan warship, 46 sailors killed
None has led to outright war and there is therefore reason to think that this time as well, the South will have to live with the loss, unless it wants to risk a major conflict.
The investigation's findings have thrown the issue into the lap of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who happens to be arriving in Beijing this weekend with a huge American delegation to discuss the wider relationship between the US and China.
It is possible that the US, pressed by South Korea, will favour a Security Council meeting and, if such a meeting is to have any traction, China's support will be needed.
And beyond that, if new sanctions are to be imposed, China will have to support them as well, being a veto-holding member of the Council.
Yet China usually prefers to deal with North Korea on a more discreet basis (it recently welcomed North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il to Beijing) and was slow even to express sympathy for the loss of South Korean sailors.
It only comes out against the North if Pyongyang does something with wide international ramifications, notably its nuclear testing.
Suspended talks The US might, at this moment, be more concerned to keep Chinese support for sanctions against Iran - agreed by the major Security Council powers this week - than to use its diplomatic credit up in seeking further sanctions on North Korea.

Co-head of investigation team, Yoon Duk-yong: "Both sections at the failure point were bent upward"
The prospects for settling the disputed maritime border are about as distant as the prospects for getting North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons capability. Talks about the latter are currently in suspension.
North and South Korea did nearly come to a maritime modus vivendi in 2007 in talks involving the then South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun.

The idea was to concentrate on fishing - and fishing is a major North Korean concern in the disputed waters as its fishermen seek the south-migrating blue-crab from June to September.
But it came to nothing and the North clearly remains ready and willing to defend its interests there, with the South determined to uphold its position as well.
Some international experts think that what is known as the Northern Limit Line, drawn by the UN after the Korean war, should be moved in North Korea's favour, since the old international three-mile maritime limit has made way for 12.
But given the overall state of relations between North and South, there are no realistic hopes of an agreement.
There may well be further incidents ahead.

South Korea Names New Defence Minister !

Author: bbc.co.uk

Lowongan Kerja - Earlier reports said a security aide would succeed Mr Kim, who resigned after North Korea surprised Seoul by shelling a Southern island. Tuesday's barrage killed four people and sent regional tensions soaring.

Job Indonesia - On Friday, Pyongyang said joint US-South Korean naval exercises planned for next week would take the region "to the brink of war".
The North's state news agency, KCNA, said the exercises were "reckless" and the "trigger-happy" allies were deliberately targeting the North.
The North Korean artillery shelling - which killed two South Korean civilians and two marines - was one of the worst incidents between the two Koreas since the end of the Korean war in 1953, which concluded without a peace treaty.
'Reckless provocation' President Lee Myung-Bak accepted Mr Kim's resignation "to improve the atmosphere in the military and to handle the series of incidents," a presidential official said.
Earlier on Friday local news agencies reported that Lee Hee-Won, 61, had been named as new defence minister. Mr Lee is a former four-star general who became deputy chief of the US-South Korea Joint Forces Command in 2005.
He retired from the military in 2006 and was made a presidential security advisor in May following the sinking of the Cheonan, a South Korean warship.
In response to Tuesday's incident South Korea has increased troop numbers on the island, Yeonpyeong, and has said it is changing its rules of engagement to allow it to respond more forcefully to similar incidents. The old rules have been criticised as too passive.

Whoever is appointed will now have the opportunity to overhaul the country's security apparatus, says the BBC's Chris Hogg in the South Korean capital, Seoul.
The cabinet had decided that under the old rules of engagement there was too much emphasis on preventing a military incident escalating into something worse, our correspondent adds.
In future, the South would implement different levels of response depending on whether the North attacked military or civilian targets, a presidential spokesman said.
The US aircraft carrier group led by the USS George Washington is meanwhile on its way to participate in exercises with the South Korean navy - a move arranged before the incident with the North.
North Korea has warned it will "wage second and even third rounds of attacks without any hesitation if warmongers in South Korea make reckless military provocations again".

The Secret of Donald Trump Success !!!

Job Indonesia - Donald Trump was in Scotland recently, collecting an honorary doctorate from a university in Aberdeen. In the press conference afterwards, he said he was thinking about running for President in 2012. -  Job Vacancy
'Trump considers White House bid' produced more coverage than his honorary doctorate. Whether or not he runs, Trump knew the media would take the bait. They always do. - Lowongan Kerja
In 1999, he said the same thing and generated the same kind of attention. And that was just a rerun of 1987, when rumours were also flying about Trump running for President. The following year, George Bush senior was elected - without Trump on the ticket.
Through the many ups and downs of a long business career, one of Trump's key assets has been his relationship with a media that never tires of his name.
The Big Apple
Donald Trump in Central Park A man and his town: Donald Trump in Manhattan
He has had two bites at the Big Apple. In the first, he was a blonde, twenty-something tycoon from Brooklyn who developed huge, shiny buildings like Trump Tower on New York's Fifth Avenue. He and his wife Ivana became fixtures on the New York celebrity circuit.
But as the eighties drew to a close, Trump was battling for his business life, at what can now be seen as the end of the first part of his glittering career. Recession hit Trump's many projects and forced him into a spectacular near-bankruptcy. Around the same time, his marriage ended in divorce.
But Trump survived - to breathe life back into his business, and find domestic happiness again too.
The Trump franchise Today, he is a celebrity with global, rather than national, recognition. But in some ways, not much has changed.
He still lives in his Trump Tower triplex, he's still got a model wife - his third, Melania Knauss -, and he insists he's still got his own hair, whose curious architecture is now a key part of the image.
He's back at the top of his game, but this time round, it's a bigger game than in the eighties.

Trump: 'I like Alan very much'
There are 21 Trump buildings in New York, and more around the country and the world. There are 10 Trump golf courses, and another one in Scotland under construction - against some publicity-generating opposition, which he freely admits has helped raise its profile.
He has his very own beauty pageant business, Miss Universe. And he co-owns a huge global TV franchise, and stars in the original US-version of The Apprentice. (Lord Alan Sugar is Britain's version of Trump.)
Trumpeting Trump The key to Trump's business and media longevity, in both phases of his career, has been his ability to monetise his name.

Start Quote

Trump's career was never just about money... fame was the real goal.”
End Quote Ned Eichler former business partner
Putting "Trump" in large gold letters on Trump Tower may have started as an ego-trip, but it quickly turned into a smart business move. Today he estimates the brand centred on his name as being worth $3bn - about half the $6bn he says he's worth.
Others dispute the figures: the authoritative Forbes Rich List, with which he regularly disagrees, has him down for 'only' $2bn to $3bn.
Whatever the number, nobody disputes that the name Donald J. Trump, on a residential building, a hotel, or even a silk tie, gives it a value it wouldn't have if it was branded Donald J. Bloggs.
Ned Eichler, a businessman who dealt with Trump in the early days, recognised Trump's priorities right from his first project. Trump's career, recalls Eichler, was never just about money: "money was just part of the fame, but fame was the real goal."
Too big to fail
Donald Trump, Bob Hope and Ivana Trump Donald and Ivana Trump, here with Bob Hope, were part of New York High Society
Trump turned fame into money by writing an early autobiography and self-help book, The Art of the Deal, a couple of years before his financial crisis. He plugged it relentlessly, even turning up on the Wogan show with his wife Ivana. The book was a huge best-seller, adding to the name-recognition he had already created.
In his late eighties crisis, when a slew of Trump businesses were struggling to keep up interest payments on massive loans, his creditors had to decide whether to pull the plug on his empire. That they decided not to, says his biographer Gwenda Blair, was thanks to his name recognition:
"He was one of the first to get, that getting his name on things, getting his name associated with luxury, and making himself the central character, would make him the irreplaceable piece."
He was, in a phrase the recent global financial crisis has made familiar again, "too big to fail".
New caution Trump has his own account of how he scraped through that crisis, saying "it turned out that the banks liked me a lot". But he admits he 'took his eye off the ball' in the late eighties, over-expanding and believing his own hype.

Mark Burnett: 'Donald is not the kind of enemy you would want'
Who wouldn't when, as he remembers, his own father told him that "everything you touch turns to gold?"
Twenty years on, he's more cautious, saying he calculates what might go wrong before committing himself to a deal.
One sign of this new caution is what he calls the "branding deals" he negotiates with the developers of some of the latest Trump buildings.
They use his name on the building, along with his contacts and marketing expertise, and give him a share of the upside. If the project goes wrong, Trump's financial exposure is limited.
Family business At the same time, with the help of three of his children, Don Jnr, Ivanka and Eric, who now work as Trump executives, he's taken his business in new directions to exploit the brand he's created.
So alongside new luxury apartment blocks like New York's Trump World Tower, the tallest residential building in the city, there are the golf clubs and overseas resorts, such as those in Hawaii and (to come) Panama.

And there are Trump managed hotels, like the huge gold building in Las Vegas, where the Trump brand, once the preserve of the super-rich, is open to anyone who wants to stay a night in a reasonably priced room.
The familiar business journey from upmarket to profitable mass market works for Trump as well as for other brands.
At 64, Donald Trump is still firing on all cylinders. In years to come, it will be up to his children to maintain the right kind of media profile, so that the company can keep charging a premium for the name Mr Trump has worked so hard to associate with success.
